This May, Ala Moana Center offers shoppers the perfect mix of retail and music therapy. Beat back the workweek blues with performances by the Hawaii Starshine Academy, Lincoln Elementary School, Kaimuki High School as well as the Hawaii State Ballet and Polynesian Cultural Center, which takes to Centerstage every Tuesday throughout the month. You also won’t want to miss a special musical theater preview of Baylor ShowTime!’s renditions of Bye Bye Birdie, Wicked and a medley of 30’s and 40’s swing selections. Whatever your mood, Ala Moana Center offers a fabulous shopping, dining and entertainment selection every day of the week. Centerstage events for May include:
May 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29: Hele on down to Centerstage every Tuesday this month to enjoy a free 45-minute performance by the Polynesian Cultural Center. The event runs from 6:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. and highlights music and dance from the Polynesian cultures of Hawaii, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, Marquesas, New Zealand (Aotearoa) and Fiji.
May 4: Stop by Centerstage between 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. and enjoy a live performance by the Japan Training Squadron Band. The group’s brass band is a part of Japan’s Maritime Self Defense Force, which has traveled all the way from Kure, Japan.
May 5: Don’t miss the Hawaii Starshine Academy as they take to Centerstage with their performance featuring a variety of dances including hip hop, ballet, Tahitian and hula. Stop by from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. to enjoy the moves of these talented young dancers.
Hawaii Pacific University will give an electrifying concert, put on by their Sea Warrior Jazz Ensemble, at Centerstage from 4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m.
Additionally, the Iolani Dance Team will be a sure hit when they visit Ala Moana Center’s Centerstage this Saturday from 6:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. The group will perform a medley of jazz, ballet, lyrical and hip hop and is comprised of students grades K – 12 from the school’s after-school program.
May 6, 13, 20 & 27: Bring the family by Centerstage every Sunday this May from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., and enjoy the grace and charm of Ala Moana Center’s Keiki Hula Show featuring Halau Na Mamo O Ka’ala and Kanilau.
May 6: Mark your calendar! Desi McKenzie’s Hawaii Youth Chorus visits Ala Moana Center’s Centerstage from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. as they perform a musical showcase in their Spring Showchoral Concert. The 80-member children’s chorus ranges from grades K – 6 and welcomes students from elementary schools across the island.
Additionally, shoppers have the opportunity to enjoy a live performance by Seabury Hall Upper School’s Symphonic Band. The students, grades 9-12, are from upcountry Maui and will perform from 4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. Bring the keiki and enjoy some relaxing tunes.
May 8: Take a break this Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. and enjoy the sweet sounds of Greg and Junko MacDonald. Ala Moana Center shoppers can relax and enjoy the couple’s performance of classic and contemporary Hawaiian music through the beat of the steel pans. Their smooth sounds are sure to keep shoppers tapping their toes and swaying their hips as they keep up a lively beat.
May 9: The Royal Hawaiian Band makes their stately appearance at Centerstage this Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. by performing a mixture of local Hawaiian songs. The Royal Hawaiian Band is the second oldest and only full-time municipal band in the United States today. Show your support while enjoying a taste of Hawaii’s musical heritage.
May 10: Stop by Centerstage between 6:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. as Lincoln Elementary School’s Keiki Chorus holds their annual Spring Sing performance. These young students, enrolled in grades 3 – 5, will help shoppers get into the groove with their delightful music and dance numbers.
May 11: Enjoy a live concert band performance by Aiea Intermediate School. The students, enrolled in grades 7 – 8, will perform from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.
Additionally, shoppers who stop by Centerstage from 4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. will get a front row view of an appearance by the 2007 Mrs. Hawaii contestants and a special hula performance by the reigning Mrs. Hawaii. Shoppers will also get to catch a glimpse of a fashion show featuring these remarkable women and Ala Moana Center merchants.
May 12: Hawaii’s own Brigham Young University will pay a visit to Ala Moana shoppers with a traditional Korean drum and dance performance at Centerstage by the BYUH Korean Club. The club will perform from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. this Saturday.
From 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m., the Iwalani School of Dance will feature a variety of authentic hula, Tahitian and Maori dances.
Additionally, come by Centerstage from 4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. as Vocal & Dance Expressions’ Star of the Sea’s “Li’l Stars” help shoppers celebrate Mother’s Day by putting on a show dedicated to mothers. The recital brings together 24 preschool children ranging from 2 to 5 years of age.
May 13: Halau Hula O Hokulani takes to Centerstage with their performance of hula kahiko (traditional hula) and hula auana (modern hula). The halau, comprised of keiki and kupuna ranging from 3 to 70 years of age, will perform from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. to live Hawaiian music.
Additionally, “A Class Act” Neighborhood Show Kids from Hawaii’s Vocal & Dance Expressions will engage the audience at Centerstage from 4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. with their Mother’s Day tribute performance.
May 14: The Police Week Proclamation kicks off their annual event at Ala Moana Center’s Centerstage from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. The event features a proclamation by Mayor Mufi Hannemann as well as Police Chief Boisse Correa. Come out to show your support!
May 16: Visit Centerstage on Wednesday for some smooth dance moves by the The Steptaculars. The group will perform a series of tap, jazz and Broadway dance numbers from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m.
Additionally, Kaimuki High School will hold a concert band performance from 6:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.
May 17: Pahoa Intermediate and High School students pay Ala Moana Center shoppers a visit from the Big Island, bringing their Na Pua Mae’ole Hawaiian Music Ensemble. The students, currently attending grades 7 – 12, will perform a mixture of hula and Hawaiian music from 4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m.
May 18: Baylor ShowTime! from Baylor University in Texas will stage a brief American and musical theater variety performance highlighting a variety of current musical favorites including Bye Bye Birdie, Wicked and 30’s – 40’s swing selections. Pay a visit to Centerstage on Friday from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. and find out what the show is all about!
Additionally, the Hawaii State Ballet will dazzle shoppers with a performance of classical and contemporary ballet from 7:00 pm. – 7:45 p.m.
May 19: Centerstage comes alive from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. this Saturday with the smooth moves of local halau Na Hula O Kaleiokapualani.
Take a break from shopping to watch a concert band performance by the Hilo Intermediate School 8th-grade students. The recital will run 4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m.
Additionally, get in the mood to move with The Center ... a performing arts place at Ala Moana Center’s Centerstage. Dancers of all ages will boogie down with an exciting choreography of hip hop and jazz moves from 6:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.
May 20: Support the Bulldogs of Kaimuki High School as the school’s Kaimuki Vocalz Choir performs this Sunday from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m.
Ala Moana shoppers can attend a show by Halau Hula ‘O Kana Kapeka from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m., which will offer a medley of hula and Tahitian dances by performers ranging from 5 to 65 years of age.
Additionally, swing by Centerstage from 4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. to feel the excitement and energy of the Honolulu Dance Studio during their jazz and hip hop dance performance.
May 23: Middle school students from Kealakehe Intermediate School make the interisland trip from the Big Island to Ala Moana Center’s Centerstage. The school’s concert band will perform on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
May 27: On Sunday, students from Spanaway Lake High School travel from Washington, to enjoy our aloha spirit and share some beautiful music. The Music Company Show Choir will perform from 4:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
May 30: Visit Centerstage from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. for Japan’s Hiroshima Hawaiian Aikokai performance of hula and Hawaiian music.
