Talented Performers from Around the Globe Take the Spotlight at Ala Moana Center’s Centerstage This June
HONOLULU – This June, Ala Moana Center kicks off summer with an assortment of dance and musical performances representing a variety of backgrounds and cultures. Throughout the month, Centerstage will host groups from Japan, California, Washington and Colorado to entertain shoppers. For fans of Japan’s performing arts, don’t miss the Pan-Pacific Festival, which runs this month from June 8 – 10, and showcases songs, music and dancing from a number of Japan’s talented performers. Centerstage events for this June include:
June 2: Enjoy a live performance by Pearl City’s Highlands Intermediate School Jazz Band from 6:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. The group will keep shoppers entertained with a jazz concert featuring students from the school’s eighth grade.
June 3, 10, 17 & 24: Every Sunday this June, Ala Moana Center’s Keiki Hula Show graces Centerstage. Stop by from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and enjoy the beautiful hula of Halau Na Mamo O Ka’ala and Kanilau featuring Hawaii’s own talented youth.
June 3: Contemporary Christian music group, Pacific Island Praise, visits Centerstage from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. The band will perform a medley of musical selections with a hula accompaniment.
June 4: Visit Centerstage for some upbeat dance moves by The Steptaculars. The group will perform a series of tap, jazz and Broadway dance numbers from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m.
June 5, 12, 19, 26: Take a break at Centerstage every Tuesday this month for an enlightening and entertaining 45-minute performance by the Polynesian Cultural Center. The performance is held from 6:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. and highlights music and dance from the Polynesian cultures of Hawaii, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, Marquesas, New Zealand (Aotearoa) and Fiji.
June 6: On this Monday, Centerstage hosts Island Winds, a Hawaiian musical group hailing from Tokyo, Japan. Stop by from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. and enjoy their renditions of several local favorites.
June 8, 9, 10: This weekend shoppers will be able to enjoy an assortment of entertainment courtesy of Ala Moana Center and the Pan-Pacific Festival. Ala Moana Center shoppers can relax and revel in a medley of Japanese performances featuring song, dance and a selection of instruments.
On Friday, June 8, the Pan-Pacific Festival Fursato Stage will take place from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
On June 9, the Pan-Pacific Hula Festival will run from 12:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. The hula festival will be followed by Omatsuri Hiroba, from 4:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. The group will showcase a mix of modern and traditional performing arts highlighting the culture’s unique song and dance.
On Sunday, June 10, a variety of performances that are part of the Pan-Pacific Festival Friendship Stage will be featured at Centerstage from 12:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
June 12: The Iwao Sugimoto Ukulele Orchestra arrives at Centerstage, performing a number of musical selections from 12:00 p.m. – 12:30 p.m.
June 15: Stop by Centerstage from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. as the Troupe Cabana Productions presents their “Music America” review. The performance by university students in Northern California celebrates 100 years of performing American music.
Additionally, high school students from El Camino High School make the trip from Sacramento, California, to Centerstage. The school’s concert band will feature a variety of pop music selections on Friday from 4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m.
June 16: Pilioha visits Centerstage from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. to share Hawaiian music selections from their new, self-titled debut album, “Pilioha.”
Additionally, the Royal Hawaiian Band makes a regal appearance at Centerstage from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. performing a variety of songs. The Royal Hawaiian Band is the second oldest and only full-time municipal band in the United States today. Stop by and experience a part of Hawaii’s musical heritage.
In recognition of Father’s Day, the Kalihi Education Coalition will hold their Father-Child talent contest at Centerstage from 4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. The coalition is made up of Kalihi residents and students.
June 18: Kulani Dance Studio offers Ala Moana Center shoppers the opportunity to enjoy a showcase of various Hawaiian dances including hula, Tahitian, Maori and Samoan dances. The performance features the work of selected students from ages 4 - 18 and will run from 6:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.
June 21: Take a break from shopping to watch a performance by Clark College this Thursday at Centerstage. The school’s jazz band, which traveled from Vancouver, Washington, will take to the stage from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m., followed by their concert choir, who will perform from 2:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
June 23: Swing by Centerstage from 4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. and get a front-row seat to a hula performance by Halau ‘Olapakuikala’ i ‘O Hokuaulani. The dance recital will highlight halaus from both Hawaii and Japan.
June 25: Hula Halau Kahula O Hawaii, a hula halau from Japan, will showcase their talent for shoppers from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.
June 29: Show your support for members of the Colorado Honor Band Association’s Summer Winds Tour Band this Friday from 2:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. The band from Denver, Colorado, is comprised of student musicians ranging in age from 12 – 18.
Additionally, the Hawaii State Ballet will dazzle shoppers with a performance of classical and contemporary ballet from 7:00 pm. – 7:45 p.m.
June 30: Ala Moana Center shoppers can attend a hula performance by Halau Hula O Nawahine from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m.
Additionally, from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m., relax and take in a dance performance put on by the Iwalani School of Dance. The group will perform a variety of hula, Tahitian and Maori dances.
This Saturday, the Honolulu Dance Studio will preview their upcoming July production for shoppers. The show will take place from 4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. at Centerstage.
