Ala Moana Center Gears Up for the New Year with Fantastic Events and Performances in January
HONOLULU – This January, Ala Moana Center’s Centerstage features a variety of exciting performances and events to get shoppers excited for 2007. Dance performances featuring everything from hula to hip hop and events such as GEAR UP’s College Awareness Event and T & C’s Go Big Promotion are sure to draw in audiences with great giveaways and smooth dance moves. Also, be sure to stop by to take part in casting calls for two of CBS’s hit reality television shows, “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race.” Get the new year off to a great start with these outstanding events at Ala Moana Center.
January 2, 4, 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, 25 & 30: Take a break at Centerstage every Tuesday and Thursday this January for a free, 45-minute show by the Polynesian Cultural Center. The performance runs from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. and highlights music and dance from the Polynesian cultures of Hawaii, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, Marquesas, New Zealand (Aotearoa) and Fiji.
January 6: GEAR UP kicks off College Awareness Month this Saturday with their College Awareness Event at Centerstage from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The event features a proclamation by Governor Linda Lingle as well as entertainment and a variety of community booths. This is a great event for prospective college students.
January 7, 14, 21 & 28: Bring the family by Centerstage every Sunday this month from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., and enjoy the grace and charm of Ala Moana Center’s Keiki Hula Show featuring Halau Na Mamo O Ka’ala and Kanilau.
January 7: Town & Country Surf hosts their annual Go Big Promotion featuring a free autograph session with well-known professional bodyboarders as well as great product giveaways. This event takes place from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Centerstage.
January 8: Stop by Centerstage on Monday for some high-stepping dance moves by the The Steptaculars. The group will perform a series of tap, jazz and Broadway dance numbers from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m.
January 13: Beloved local artist Jomel Sumira will put on a vocal and ukulele performance this Saturday from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. A brief 15-minute autograph session will follow.
January 14: Think you’ve got star quality? Head on down to Centerstage this Sunday to take part in “The Amazing Race” Casting Call. Local residents can take the opportunity to audition for a spot on CBS’s hit reality television show, “The Amazing Race” from 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. “The Amazing Race” is scheduled to begin its 11th season where contestants will travel across the globe in the hopes of snagging a $1 million cash prize.
January 20: This Saturday Centerstage hosts Hawaii Minyo Buyo, a Japanese cultural dance exchange featuring performers from Hawaii, Japan and San Francisco. Stop by from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. and enjoy watching these dancers communicate through the common language of dance.
January 21: Nix Performing Arts Center offers Ala Moana Center shoppers the opportunity to enjoy a showcase of various dances including jazz and hip hop. The performance features the smooth moves of dancers ages 6-18 from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.
January 26: Hawaii State Ballet will dazzle shoppers with a classical and contemporary ballet performance from 7:00 pm. – 7:45 p.m.
January 27: Think you’re a survivor? This Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. CBS will host a “Survivor” Casting Call at Centerstage. The hit reality television show on CBS strands contestants in a deserted locale and forces them to compete in a variety of challenges. Each week a new contestant is voted off the show by other cast members and one winner emerges to win a massive cash prize. “Survivor” has just concluded its 13th season.
