Ala Moana Center will celebrate its landmark 50th anniversary on Thursday, August 13, 2009 and will present a two-and-a-half-week celebration to feature a myriad of 50th anniversary themed special events and sales and promotions for customers to participate in and enjoy.

Kick Off Birthday Celebration
August 13 at 5:30pm
Featuring a traditional Hawaiian blessing and an honorarium ceremony to congratulate the Center’s remaining 11 original businesses (Crack Seed Center, Dairy Queen, Foodland, Longs Drugs, Reyns, Sears, Shirokiya, Slipper House, Territorial Savings Bank, U.S. Post Office, and Watamull's) and employees who also will be celebrating their 50th anniversary at the Center. The Center will also give away 1959 chocolate bars, five of which will contain a hidden golden ticket. The five lucky ticket holders will each be awarded one $250 gift card each.
Fifty Years of Fashion Exhibition
Open August 13-31 from 10am - 8pm, Mall Level 3 Adjacent to Nordstrom
In partnership with Hawai‘i Fashion Incubator, Ala Moana Center is proud to present “Fifty Years of Fashion in Hawai‘i,” an exhibition featuring garments from the University of Hawai at Manoa’s impressive archived Costume Collection.

The exhibition, will feature 50 garments from the past 50 years, and will include special displays of swimwear, aloha attire, and era-inspired fashion wear. Current fashions inspired by past eras, archived fashion magazines and notable Ala Moana Center advertisements will also be on display.
Centerstage Entertainment
50 performances by past performers will take place at Centerstage including local hula hālau, community groups, and mainland and international acts. Most notably, Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winning musicians Hoku Zuttermeister, Ten Feet and Darren Benitez will perform to celebrate the return of top entertainers to Centerstage and highlight Hawai‘i’s favorite music through the decades.
Mall Wide Gift With Purchase
Receive a free exclusive 50th anniversary commemorative keepsake with $200 or more in receipts. Redeem your Ala Moana Center receipts dated August 13 - 31 at the Customer Service Center.
Limit one gift per person. Receipts must be dated 8/13/09 - 8/31/09 and redeemed at the Customer Service Center within the same time period. Offer good while supplies last. Must be 13 years of age or older to participate. Thanks to an overwhelming response, the keepsake keyring is no longer available.
Cancellation Stamp
Local and visiting guests interested in bringing home a free collector’s keepsake can visit Ala Moana Center’s U.S. Post Office from August 13-15, August 21 and August 31 for an exclusive 50th anniversary commemorative cancellation.
Any item with a First Class stamp can be imprinted with the special cancellation, and Ala Moana’s Customer Service Center will offer a commemorative envelope that can be paired with a stamp for cancellation. The U.S. Post Office will have a table at Centerstage on August 13, making it extra convenient for shoppers to get their Ala Moana Center special commemorative cancellation.
Sales, Discounts and In Store Events
In addition to the above events, individual retailers will be offering 50th anniversary sales, special offers, gift-with-purchase promotions, in-store events, and commemorative 50th anniversary products.
Ala Moana Center's 50th Anniversary Photo Contest
Ala Moana Center is celebrating its 50th anniversary! Spanning five decades from the first days of statehood to modern day Hawai'i, this milestone marks how Ala Moana Center has served the community as its favorite gathering place to shop, dine and be entertained.
As part of the celebration, we are hosting a special photo contest. Send us your favorite photos at Ala Moana Center, including your fondest childhood moment, shopping for a special occasion, hanging out with friends, or simply an artistic shot of the center. Photos can be taken any year since Ala Moana Center opened on August 13, 1959. To enter, send up to (4) four photos (including a brief caption and the year the photo was taken), along with your contact information (see contest rules for requirements) by July 31, 2009.
Selected photos will be featured in a special 50th Anniversary Photo Retrospective at Centerstage from August 13-31, 2009. One lucky winner will receive a $250 Ala Moana Center gift card!

- All entries must be received by July 31, 2009
- Send color or black and white prints, or digital images only. No slides will be accepted. Digital images must be at least 300 dpi; TIFF, EPS or JPG format; RGB and 8bit.
- Only photos taken at Ala Moana Center are eligible. All photos should include a brief caption and the year the photo was taken.
- Each photograph must be accompanied by the following information: Name, street address, city, state, zip code, phone number and email.
- Ala Moana Center and Stryker Weiner & Yokota Public Relations, Inc. are not responsible for lost or damaged photos.
- Please do not send original slides or prints. Photos and CDs will not be returned.
