Make way for good fortune and usher in the “Year of the Dog” at Ala Moana Center’s annual Chinese New Year celebration. Also known as the Lunar New Year, Chinese New Year is an important centuries-old tradition that is widely celebrated in the Hawaiian Islands. On Feb. 15, 16 and 17, Ala Moana Center will offer family-friendly entertainment, including cultural performances and lion dancing.
• Thursday, Feb. 15 and Friday, Feb. 16
6pm Pole Jumping at Centerstage – Pole jumping by Wah Ngai Lion Dance Association.
• Saturday, Feb. 17
11am Center-wide Celebration – Kung Fu demonstrations, dance performances by Phoenix Dance Chamber and lion dancing throughout the Center. Shoppers can enjoy the sights and sounds of more than 20 lions spreading good luck and collecting lai see (red envelopes) from stores. Lion dancers from Chinese Lion Dance Association; Chinese Physical Culture Association; Hawaii Lion Dance Association; Gee Yung Martial Arts, Dragon and Lion Dance Association; Koko Head Martial Arts Academy; Lung Kong Physical Culture Association; and Wah Ngai Lion Dance Association will visit retailers throughout the Center.
2pm Meet the Lion Dancers at Centerstage – Families will have the chance to meet members from the Hawaii Lion Dance Association, learn about the history of lion dancing and take pictures.
