ABOUT FRIENDS OF THE CHILDREN’S JUSTICE CENTER OF OAHU
Friends of the Children’s Justice Center of Oahu (Friends), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was principally created in 2010 to provide financial support, volunteers, and other resources to help the Children’s Justice Center of Oahu meet the needs of child victims. Since its inception in 2010, Friends has provided resources that enable the Center to care for hundreds of child victims and their family members each year. With Friends’ help, the Center is able to provide snacks, meals, and comfort items while the child victim is at the Center. In addition, Friends provides essential items that fill foster care bags, which the Center gives to victims who must enter foster care. Through its Ho‘ola Na Mana‘o Project, Friends purchases goods and services that are crucial to helping victimized children heal even after their services at the Center end.
Did you know, national statistics show that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday? Locally, there are hundreds of reported child abuse cases in Hawaii each year. On Oahu, when there is a report of abuse, the child is brought to the Children’s Justice Center for an interview. The Friends of the Children’s Justice Center of Oahu provides enhancement services to these child victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse, sex trafficking, or witnesses to violent crime, such as domestic violence.
If a child cannot return home due to safety concerns, they are placed into foster care. When this occurs, the children are unable to pack-up any personal items and often enter into an unfamiliar environment with only the clothes on their back. Friends of CJC Oahu knows the importance of giving these children something they can call their own as they go through this difficult transition. Basic necessities such as clothing, toiletries, bedding and school supplies are given to the children as their own belongings, enhancing their sense of identity, dignity, and autonomy. Help us bring comfort and hope to these children by donating to our foster care closet drive today.
